Stage 1: The Survival Kit

Lesson 5: No, Not, None

Nein, Nicht, Kein (Negation)

1. Target of Lesson

Stop nodding and smiling! You are about to learn...

2. The Art of Saying "No"

👨🏻‍🏫

"In Vietnam, we hate saying 'No'. If you ask 'Do you like my haircut?', I will say 'It looks... fresh!' even if I hate it. In Germany? They will look you in the eye and say 'Nein.' It hurts my heart, but it is efficient. Today, we learn how to be efficient."

Ming demonstrating Nope: No Money vs Not Good

Kein Money. Nicht Tasty.

Part A: The Big "Nein" (No)

This is easy. It means "No".

A: Hast du Hunger? (Do you have hunger?)
B: Nein. (No.)

Part B: The Action Killer — "Nicht" (Not)

Use Nicht when you want to negate a Verb (action) or an Adjective (description). It usually hangs out at the end of the sentence or right before the adjective.

Part C: The Noun Destroyer — "Kein" (None/No)

This is the tricky one. If you want to negate a Noun (a thing), specifically something you would use "Ein" (A/An) for, you use Kein. Think of it like this: k + ein = kein. It literally means "not a" or "no".

Wrong: Ich habe nicht Geld. (I have not money) -> Sounds robotic.

Right: Ich habe kein Geld. (I have no money.)

The "Ein -> Kein" Magic Trick

Positive (Yes) Negative (No) Meaning
Das ist ein Apfel. Das ist kein Apfel. That is no apple.
Ich habe eine Idee. Ich habe keine Idee. I have no idea.
Ich trinke Wasser. Ich trinke kein Wasser. I drink no water.

Ming's "Banh Mi" Analogy

🥪

"Imagine you go to a Banh Mi shop. If the shop is closed, you say: 'Der Laden ist nicht offen' (Not open - Adjective). If the shop is open but has no bread, you say: 'Wir haben kein Brot' (No bread - Noun). See the difference? Adjective = Nicht. Thing = Kein."

Vocabulary to Reject Things

German Vietnamese Audio
Nein Không (Trả lời câu hỏi)
Nicht Không (Phủ định hành động)
Kein / Keine Không có (Phủ định danh từ)
Doch! Có chứ!

Ming's Favorite Word: "Doch!" If someone says "You are not hungry" (Du hast keinen Hunger), you reply "Doch!" (Yes I am!). It destroys their negation.
